the ohio state university | 24 hour design competition
the competition theme is that of respite. simply defined, respite is an interval of rest or relief. the site is an exterior space within an ohio hospital complex. as such, respite may include anything that restores people: patients, family members, employees, or visitors. the occasion may be individual or social, active or reflective, familial or professional. the hospital administration is intrigued by biophilia, the human tendency to interact or be closely associated with other forms in nature. however, designs should not be restricted to landscape investigations and should consider architectural and planning interventions as well. the extent of these interventions is left to the discretion of the designers.
the site is an open space bounded to the east by parking, to the north by loading dock access drive and a cafeteria that extends to the western boundary, and to the south by a blank wall and second loading dock access drive. all existing paving and planting can be removed within this area. the connection between interior and exterior should be exploited, and the existing building boundary carefully considered.
